This e-mail is from Karen Barstow of Pownal. "and now you have the rest of the story" about Pownal.

Good morning all,
The statement that Pownal's tax increase is a result of a spike in valuation is untrue.
Pownal's "additional local spending" went from approximately $150,000 (2008/09) to roughly $550,000 in 2009/10, a direct result of our consolidation. That is a $400,000 increase! Many people in Pownal voted for consolidating because they feared the roughly $50,000 in penalties that we would face for not consolidating. Should have taken the penalty.
The $400k accounts for a large portion of the 26% increase in our taxes. Newell is claiming that this had 0 impact on our taxes? It is a blatent lie.
I will find the exact percentage of our increase that resulted from our property tax valuation.
I'm sure he will try to use this argument again.
The short answer to his statement would be to ask if he thinks a $400,000 increase (250%!!) in additional local spending for education had no affect on our taxes.
Sorry I didn't get this out there sooner Betsy! Great job this morning!!
Karen
