Good evening,
This is truly not early evening as I promised. Instead of printing out
a list of people who say they will support repeal, I shall bring the
list with me tommorrow because it is not long.
We'll gather as close to 8 AM as you can comfortably get to Augusta
on the third floor in between the House and Senate. Either I or Judy
will try to be there to welcome you and get you started. I am going to
bring name tags. We might write our name, town, and position (such as
school board member, selectman, principal, superintendent) or nothing if
you wish. I'll also have some REPEAL stickers which you can wear if you
wish.
My good friend, Dick Gould, shared some good advice about meeting
legislators in Augusta, which I shall share with you. He suggested a
name tag. I think that members of the legislature wear blue name tags,
but that could be passe. Approach the legislator, introduce yourself,
and ask them if they will vote to repeal the school consolidation law.
Listen to what they have to say and answer their questions politely and
honestly. Do not get in an argument with anyone. If they don't want to
talk, that is their privilege. Please keep a list of anyone you talk
with and make a note about whether they wiil vote to repeal or not vote
to repeal or are undecided or have any questions. Please give those
notes to me, Judy Sproule, or Lauren Romain before you leave. Please
ask any questions of us if you don't know the answer.
At this point, we do not know when the repeal bill will be coming out of
committee. That is one of our goals for tomorrow. We hope to have an
opportunity to talk with the Speaker of the House, Glenn Cummings. At
noon, there will be a meeting of the rural caucus and some of us may
attend that.
We have serious work to do, but let's be loose, enjoy this experience,
and do the best job we can. I've have my cell phone with me if you need
to contact me. It is 460-1260.
Thank you for all your efforts, and we'll see some of you tomorrow.
I'll e-mail a report tomorrow night.
Sincerely,
Skip
